Assistive Devices for People with Hearing, Voice, Speech, or Language Disorders

Hearing aids alone are not always enough to help people communicate effectively. An Assisted Listening Device (ALD) is designed to help individuals hear speech through noise and improve sound to noise ratio. Visit us at our Wexford, PA office to learn more about how assistive listening devices can transform your life.

FAQs on Assisted Listening Devices:

What is an Assisted Listening Device (ALD)?

Assistive listening devices(opens in a new tab) are listening devices that are designed for a variety of listening situations and hearing abilities where it is difficult to hear speech through the noise. ALDs are designed to help you with environmental sounds both in the home and at work and improve the sound to noise ratio.

What types of Assisted Listening Devices are available?

There are different types of ALDs:

  1. Personal hearing amplifiers are most useful for individual conversations. They involve a mic with a listening cord attached.
  2. FM, Induction Loop, and Ultraviolet Systems(opens in a new tab) are used in situations where the person or people you're trying to listen to are a further distance away from you such as in a church or at a stadium.

Can I use an Assistive Listening Device if I have a hearing aid?

Some situations, such as high exposure to city noise, will require more hearing capacity. Restaurants, grocery stores or simply places with poor acoustics can have a negative effect on the speech you wish to understand; that is where ALDs can provide support. Take note that assistive listening devices can be used alongside a hearing aid or cochlear implant(opens in a new tab) to help you hear in specific situations.
